Powerboat Exploring

Two powerboats will be used to access narrow canyons and areas where the houseboat can’t anchor.

Kayaking

Fun Day

We will set aside one “fun day” during the trip for kayaking, paddle-boarding, and water sports or simply relaxing on the top deck and taking in the mind-blowing landscape of Glen Canyon.

Reflection Canyon

Reflection Canyon

2-4 miles of hiking along uneven, and at times, steep terrain to reach many of the locations including the Reflection Canyon viewpoint.

Photo editing session

Image Processing

Image critiques sessions and post processing training are included.

Rainbow over Lake Powell

Flexible Itinerary

To optimize our experience, the itinerary will be kept flexible as we work with changing weather conditions and fluctuating lake levels.

Milky Way

Astrophotography

We have timed our excursion to coincide with the new moon cycle, so if skies are clear we will be able to capture the Milky Way over some of our favorite formations!

Itinerary

Our exact itinerary will be kept very flexible to account for changing weather conditions, varying lake levels and group interest. This is simply an example of what you can expect.

Click on each day for details.

Meet in Page, AZ at 10AM for a short orientation session before boarding the houseboat and setting off on our 7 day adventure on Lake Powell.

Please be sure to eat a good breakfast prior to joining the group.

The top deck offers a birds-eye view, and is the perfect place to relax and take in the massive buttes and towering canyon walls as we navigate our way up the channel. We will eat lunch on the boat and photograph a few points of interest along the way before anchoring the houseboat for the night, and venturing out on the smaller boats for sunset.

Dinner will be served upon our return.

Logistics

Plan to arrive in Page, AZ prior to 10AM on Sept 30, 2024.

We recommend arriving the day before so you are well rested for our adventure! The closest major airports are Las Vegas and Phoenix, where you can catch a connecting flight into Page, AZ municipal airport. An alternative would be to drive from either Las Vegas (4 ½ hours), or Phoenix (5 hours). Depending on your origination point, flying directly into Page may be an option.

We will arrive back at Wahweap Marina no later than 3PM on Sept 6th, so you can plan your return travel either that evening or the following morning.

Meals, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided during the workshop. Please advise us of any dietary restrictions or food allergies upon booking so we can prepare accordingly. You are welcome to bring along any alcoholic beverages of your choice.

We are permitted to operate in Glen Canyon NRA, and a licensed boat captain will be aboard at all times. Our instructors and staff are CPR and Wilderness First Aid certified to ensure your safety and well-being.

Crew members aboard will take care of any and all logistics (including meal prep), so you can relax and concentrate on your photography.

All participants should be in good physical condition, free of mobility challenges, balance issues or extreme fear of heights. You will need to be comfortable hiking 2-4 miles per day with your camera gear, along uneven and sometimes steep terrain.

Please be prepared for any type of weather. Fall is generally quite comfortable with daytime highs in the 70’s to low 80’s, and overnight lows in the 50’s to low 60’s. That said, desert weather is very unpredictable, and being on the lake makes it even moreso.

We could experience strong winds, rain, thunderstorms, and much cooler temperatures. With our combined 30+ years experience on Lake Powell, rest assured that we have the knowledge, expertise and necessary equipment to keep you safe and comfortable no matter what Mother Nature throws our way.

Luxury Comforts in the Desert

Recommended Camera Gear

  • Mid to lightweight tripod that can be attached to your pack.

  • We recommend bringing two digital SLR or mirrorless camera bodies in case of malfunction, and to avoid excessive lens changes in the dusty desert environment.

  • Wide angle lens in the 16-35 range or wider, and f2.8 or faster for night photography. You will definitely find use for an ultra-wide.

  • Mid-range zoom in the 24-70 or 24-105 range.

  • Telephoto lens in the 100-400 or 100-500 range.

  • Circular polarizing filters.

  • ND filters could be useful for long exposures.

  • Extra batteries (this is particularly important as our ability to recharge batteries will be limited to when the boat generator is running), and extra memory cards. Don’t forget the battery charger and cords.

  • Remote cord for your camera.

  • Headlamp.

  • Cleaning supplies.

  • Water resistant protection in the form of a camera bag, dry bag, and backpack cover to hold your gear while in the smaller boats.

  • Laptop to back up your photos or work on post-processing.
